Coronavirus in Ohio: Doomsday Prepping, Bunker Life, and The Helpers

This morning, I woke up sweating and convinced I contracted Coronavirus.

Turns out, The Husband thought 77 was the perfect thermostat setting for Bunker Life.

Yesterday morning, I made the scary trip to the grocery store to Doomsday-Prep. I’m not gonna lie – I was absolutely one of the yahoos with a ridiculous amount of everything in my cart. If we go down, I’m going down with a lifetime supply of Snack Packs and Spaghettios. Don’t worry, I got some healthy shit too. But, come on – three weeks of the kids being home from school – you’re damn right I bought some junk food for them and alcohol for me!

This dude was SO prepared with his water and beer!

I got to Giant Eagle pretty early in the morning. For days, I’ve been seeing photos of empty shelves circulating the internet, so it was an immediate relief to see everything in stock.

I walked up and down every aisle in the store, grabbing multiples of everything I thought I might use at some point over the next few weeks. When I started filling up a second shopping cart, I started getting nasty looks and eye rolls.

Listen people – we are a family of five. My normal shopping trips are pretty hefty. I’m not saying I didn’t go a little overboard on some things – but let’s try and keep our judgy eye rolls to ourselves. The fact is: you don’t know who that psycho pushing two carts is feeding.

It took me a total of three hours to shop, get home and unload, then disinfect like a mofo.

The Husband and I spent the remainder of our day enthralled in COVID-19 news. We spent hours checking our Newfeeds for new stats and checking on our out-of-state families and friends. We watched live as President Trump gave a press conference, declaring a National State of Emergency. Our children sat with us, trying to understand what they could, but mostly complaining that Trump was talking too long.

Our Oldest Boy obviously grasped more of an understanding than our other two kiddos. He is 7, going on 35. His little mind was filled with questions and worries. We had to explain that the National Emergency declaration was a move to free up money and resources so our country and its people can stay safe.

Honestly, the simplicity in which we explained it to Oldest makes me feel SO much better. I’m glad that we are prepared but it makes me feel even better when I can dumb it down for all our sakes.

So, I’m gonna get a little corny here, but I think at times like this, it’s necessary. My favorite quote of all time comes from the King of Kindness himself, Mr. Rogers:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

My BAMF’s of the Day: The Helpers. Fred Rogers was SO RIGHT. There are always helpers. I talked in my previous post about how amazing our teachers have been through all this shit…But, yesterday, I saw some BAMF’s on a national level.

Watching that press conference and seeing CEO’s of big-ass corporations like Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Quest Diagnostics…standing shoulder-to-shoulder (hopefully burning their clothes thereafter), uniting instead of competing to take on this historic global event…MIND. BLOWN.

It felt like watching Mr. Macy and Mr. Gimbel shake hands in Miracle On 34th Street.

If this doesn’t give us some extra faith in humanity…good Lord, I don’t know what will!

So, here’s the deal on Bunker Life as of right now:

My family is here. We are stocked. We are healthy.

We are continuously watching the news. We are continuously talking to our kids.

We are disinfecting. We are eating our veggies and drinking some beer.

We are thankful for each other.

We are thankful for our Teachers.

We are thankful for The Helpers.

And that’s about all for right now.

I’m OK with the simplicity of these things because they’re the most important things.

My personal PSA to my few readers:

CALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS (but don’t visit, because ya know, germs). Remind them to prepare, simplify, and chill the eff out.

We’re going to be OK.

And yes, I Wore This Yesterday. Pajama Life is now a part of Bunker Life.

Yep, Christmas PJ’s for the win!
